Wollongong folk/alt.country outfit Mem Davis & The Kindred Spirits are launching their EP, If It's Over, in April 2013. While all members of the group are veterans of Sydney music scene, this is the debut recording for this new group.
While Mem Davis has been performing solo around Sydney and Wollongong since 2005, her new band only came together in 2011 when she hooked up with guitar/banjo player Luke Collings (The Pennydreadfuls, Two Trains Running) who brought a more country/roots approach to her folky tunes. After a year of solid gigs, in October 2012 the group, rounded off by Terry Evans (double bass) and Dave Thurlow (drums) entered the studio with co-producer Sean Carey to record an EP. Carey's work with similar artists such as Dead Letter Chorus, Mark Wilkinson and Jen Biddle meant that the band felt confident he could give the songs an earthy core with a touch of modern sparkle. The band hoped to capture a combination of Bright Eyes, Lucinda Williams, and Neil Young circa-1974. They got their wish.
If It's Over does not fit neatly into one musical category, but joyfully trips over several fields of inspiration. While "If It's Over" and "Your Choice" show the band's grounding in alt.country, "Broken Vows" incorporates gypsy rhythms into its folk structure, while "Over You" is a wonderful mix of smooth jazz and piercing blues.
