SENSORY DETECTIVE WORKSHOP TM - NELLE FRANCES
Autism/Asperger's Syndrome Training for health professionals, therapists, teachers and parents.

Nelle's workshop demonstrates how a person with Autism Spectrum Disorder's (ASD) response to sensory stimuli influences their behaviour, emotional development and academic progress.

Workshop outcomes include being able to:

  • Identify sensory stimuli
  • Identify which senses are affected
  • Identify indications of sensory sensitivity
  • Recognise sensory agitation
  • Understand the connection between sensory issues + behaviour
  • Establish accommodations for the ASD child

This high-impact training session includes a complete description of AS characteristics - using anecdotal examples to "make the pieces fit" the picture of the child in your care. Nelle offers insight into the processing differences and changing perspectives of individuals with Autism and Asperger's, and provides examples of resources and tools for use at home and in the classroom.

You'll learn effective strategies for dealing with the challenging behaviour that is sometimes displayed by AS children and discover why success oriented learning using positive reinforcement works for these children.

Nelle will guide you in using her Ben and His Helmet books within the curriculum and as a tool at home to help the AS child gain the skills required for emotional regulation - self assessment, self monitoring and self management.

Nelle Frances is author of the Ben and His Helmet series of fiction books for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), parent of a child with Asperger's Syndrome, Special Needs Educator, Facilitator of Sensory Detective Classes, Facilitator of AS Adult Social Group (18-35's).

Workshop's Professional Development Contribution (5.5 hours). Workshop aligns to General Capabilities in particular the organising elements of Personal & Social Capabilities, Critical & Creative Thinking and Ethical Behaviour within the Australian Curriculum.
