Based on a true story, this tragicomical tale tells the story of a sports team with a difference… Living on the margins of society, under impossible pressures, a group of desperate slum dwellers find an invitation to a handball tournament in Bavaria, Germany. This one-way ticket to the West could be the answer to their prayers and a solution to all their problems…

Machan is being shown for the first time in Australia at Tribal Theatre (346 George Street, Brisbane, the former Dendy Cinema location) on the 28 July, 2013 from 3pm. Tickets are $20 pre purchased or $25 on the door.

Absurd stories from real life are not scarce in the film industry, but Machan portrays an otherwise serious and realistic situation with a comedic twist. The lack of prospects in Sri Lanka brings a group Tamil and Sinhalese men to apply to attend a håndball tournament in Bavaria, where they pose as the non-existent Sri Lankan national team. Machan treats the serious subjects of poverty and refugee issues with humor, warmth and optimism.

Directed by Uberto Pasonli (producer of The Full Monty), filmed in Sri Lanka and Germany and featuring a cast of Sri Lankan actors, Machan has been nominated for and received multiple international awards since its release in 2008.
