Following positive feedback from Newcastle CDAT’s Drug & Alcohol Forum held in March 2012, Newcastle CDAT is holding its second Alcohol and other Drug (AOD) Conference.
The theme “Alcohol and Other Drugs @ the Crossroads” reflects the critical juncture of community and government alcohol and other drug services, groups and individuals confronting the disparity between evidence based solutions to harm minimisation. Coupled with funding shortages and the dominant public and policy discourse.
The 1.5 day Alcohol and Other Drugs @ the Crossroads Conference provides a unique perspective of harm minimisation, prevention, treatment, intervention and sentencing from a practical viewpoint by some of Australia’s leading practitioners and researchers in a diverse range of contemporary challenging topics including:
· New and emerging drugs—Not for Human Consumption
· Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) - devastating impact upon Aboriginal and other communities
· Medical responses to acute alcohol related trauma
· Changed political landscapes in AOD
· Drug Courts - a better alternative to mainline sentencing and imprisonment?
· Binge Drinking or Binge Promotion - availability and supply in an unregulated market – what works?
· Future role and direction of Community Drug Action Teams (CDATs) – their role within the community
Newcastle has been the site of international successful interventions to reduce non domestic alcohol related violence.
