Mal McCallum back in Sydney for One Gig Only

22 years after leaving Sydney to go back home to New Zealand, Mal McCallum has finally managed to get back for one gig only at the Newsagency!

Mal lived and worked all over Sydney and places a little further afield for 13 years, after landing a recording deal for (then) CBS Records Australia in 1978. He ended up doing a pile of session work, TV shows and supports for the likes of Joni Mitchell and Jon English. Armed with his signature acoustic guitar sound, Mal is an accomplished songwriter bringing to life melodic, rhythmic, bluesy, folky stories of life and love, a blending of truth and fiction.

He was inspired and influenced to start writing music by James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Crosby Stills and Nash and Neil Young amongst others. Mal released two vinyl albums for CBS, and has independently released two CDs in New Zealand – Stepping Stones in 2000, and Above the Wires in 2006.

He is currently working on a new CD, part of the reason for being back in Sydney.

“There are some great musicians and studios, and I have a family connection there too with my daughter and son in law. They have been on to me for a while to get some tunes done, so it’s a good excuse to do a gig as well, and hopefully catch up with a few of my old friends, and my old audience. I still play all the time in New Zealand, and still love performing, and it just feels like the right time to get back into the Australian scene, even just for one night to start with.”
