Based in Sydney, the six-piece ensemble Chaika take their name from the Bulgarian word for ‘seagull’. They create a beguiling and original sound-world, blending 4 female voices with clarinet, violin, piano, accordion, double-bass, guitar and percussion.
Chaika draws influence from folk traditions, jazz and classical music. Described as ‘cinematic, deeply touching and meditative’, as well as ‘exuberant, virtuosic and uplifting’, Chaika’s strength is the elusiveness of their style. Like their namesake, Chaika gently wander through foreign lands, through storms and through stories, emerging rich with experience and an enchanting tale to tell.
Their two independent album releases, 'I Monti' (2014) & 'Chaika' (2012) explore a rich collection of both traditional and original compositions, which have taken them to many major folk festivals and venues across Australia.
Originally an all girl quartet, last year their dynamic was taken to a new level with the addition of Gosford based musician Rendra Freestone and Swedish double bassist Johan Delin. Rendra's sensitive and creative use of a wide range of percussion instruments injects a contagious energy into all of Chaika's live performances, while Johan, who now calls Sydney home, moves with ease through genres of jazz, tango and folk and brings to Chaika both a playful humor and dedicated seriousness. Laura Bishop, who introduced Rendra to the band through her guest performances with his taiko group The Rhythm Hunters, brings much of the Balkan element to Chaika’s sound from her extensive performance experience with Bulgarian women's choir Martenitsa, as well as sweeping cinematic soundscapes inspired by her past as a film score orchestrator and work with Australian film composers such as Nigel Westlake and David Hirschfelder. Laura’s sister, Susie Bishop, is one of the most in demand vocalists of both the classical and contemporary folk scenes of Australia, singing with highly esteemed groups such as The Song Company, The Parsons Affayre and The Renaissance Players. Her superb violin playing is an intimately spellbinding aspect of Chaika’s sound. Classically trained pianist, Emily-Rose Sarkova, has fast become one of the most popular piano accordion players of Sydney, playing with big names such as ARIA award winning Monsieur Camembert and tango quintet Tángalo. Her compositional skills and virtuosity at both keyboards are integral to Chaika’s magic. Laura Altman's understated and hauntingly beautiful clarinet is often admired for it's unique timbre, and her heavy involvement in the free improvised music scene creates a space and unique gossamer texture to the music.
Fresh from touring their second album, 'I Monti', and having previously graced the stage of Camelot, tonight they will be descending downstairs to the luxury of the Django Bar. Join them, pull up a couch, and enjoy this rare opportunity to hear an evening of their unique music.
‘It is easy to be enchanted by the beauty of their four-part harmony vocals’
– Tony Hillier, The Australian
‘Beautiful! I love the way your pieces often abruptly shift gears, and how the textures change - how we're bopping along with an instrumental when suddenly we're into four-part female vocals… Most of all I love the soul with which you imbue your pieces’
- Martin Wesley-Smith (Australian composer)
‘Clarinet, accordion, violin & double bass all intertwine diversely & at times unpredictably giving Chaika a rich depth. … such a young & talented group of musicians’ – Eastside Radio, Sydney
