The Evan Lohning Jazz Orchestra

Jazz pianist, arranger/composer Evan Lohning presents a special concert featuring his 16-piece big band @Foundry616

Debuting a new and updated program of jazz originals and arrangements, Evan has assembled a mighty crew of talented younger players and seasoned professionals to take the house through a tailored program of classic jazz mood and feeling.

The Evan Lohning Jazz Orchestra was born in 1998 out of a desire to achieve a personal jazz vision in the concert jazz ensemble format: an ongoing quest for the perfect symbiosis between written and improvised music.

The ELJO continues the auteur tradition of Duke Ellington, Gil Evans and Thad Jones—jazz arrangers whose real instrument was the orchestra. Evan writes all the band’s arrangements, shaping the distinctive sound of the band, and it’s this approach which makes the ELJO stand apart from most big bands performing today.

Musicians include: Susan Gai Dowling vocals • Max Alduca bass• Andrew Dickeson drums• Warwick Alder trumpet • Murray Jackson alto sax/clarinet•Mark Barnsley trombone•Dane LaBoyrie trumpet • Evan Harris alto sax/flute•Brendan Champion trombone

Evan currently teaches jazz arranging at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and has arranged music for James Morrison, Don Burrows, Dale Barlow, Ian Cooper, Emma Pask, Tom Burlinson, John Morrison's Swing City amongst many others.
