Opening night charity screening - ‘The Good Lie’

Event Cinemas Glendale
Thurs 20 November 2014, 6pm

Please join the Trans Tasman Radiation Oncology Group for an opening night charity screening of The Good Lie at Event Cinemas Glendale on Thursday 20 November, 2014 at 6pm.

In The Good Lie, Philippe Falardeau (writer and director of the Oscar®- nominated Foreign Language film Monsieur Lazhar) brings to life the story of a group of young victims orphaned by the brutal civil war in Sudan that began in 1983.

Simply known as ‘The Lost Boys’, they travelled as many as a thousand miles on foot in search of safety. Fifteen years later, a humanitarian effort would bring 3600 lost boys and girls to America.

Academy Award® winner Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line) stars alongside Sudanese actors Arnold Oceng, Ger Duany, Emmanuel Jal, and newcomer Nyakuoth Weil, many of whom were also children of war.

The film is rated PG-13.

Tickets are only $30 each and include movie entry, canapes, a complimentary drink on arrival and $10 worth of raffle tickets for prizes donated by local businesses.

The screening promises to be an enjoyable social event and all profits from ticket sales will support the Trans Tasman Radiation Oncology Group (TROG). Based at Calvary Mater Newcastle, the group conducts internationally recognised research into ways to improve radiotherapy treatments for those fighting cancer.

Radiotherapy is a common treatment for cancers including those of the breast, prostate, head, neck, lung and skin. It involves using high energy x-rays to shrink or destroy tumours, and may be used in conjunction with other treatment options such as chemotherapy and surgery.

Of the one in two men and one in three women under the age of 85 who will be diagnosed with cancer in Australia, approximately half would benefit from radiotherapy as part of their treatment.

TROG is currently the highest recruiting cancer clinical trials group in Australia. Over 12,000 patients have participated in TROG trials since the organisation began 1989, including many patients from the Hunter Region.

In 2013, TROG won the ‘Innovation in Cancer Clinical Trials’ award at the NSW Premiers Awards for Outstanding Cancer Research.
