The Australian Army Band Sydney is widely acknowledged as one of Australia’s most dynamic musical ensembles. The musicians, all serving members of the Australian Army, unite as a Big Band to promote the works of contemporary composers and arrangers whilst upholding the traditional standards of swing.

Its vibrant enthusiasm, tight section playing and show-stopping soloists mean the Band is in constant demand. By working closely with charities, schools and touring to outlying areas of regional Australia, the Band is able to achieve its directed mission to enhance the public image of the Australian Army. As part of the Band’s charter, they are often requested to support high profile vice-regal, government and public events of significance. Such occasions have included the official Australia Day celebrations at Darling Harbour, the Melbourne Grand Prix, the Bathurst 1000 and, on an international stage, the Basel and Edinburgh Tattoos.

Since its inception, members of the Band have contributed to active service spanning most theatres of conflict within Australia’s military history. In recent times they have entertained coalition forces in East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Over the years, the Army Band has released numerous recordings of its work. Honours include a nomination for ‘Best Contemporary Jazz Album’ from the Australian Jazz Awards in 2003 and a Gold Aria in 2008. This December they will launch their latest CD of original Big Band works, all of which have been written by members of the group.

The Army Band Sydney is under the command of Major Peter O’Connor. Big Band direction is by trumpet player Sergeant Cameron Earl, one of Sydney’s most sought after recording artists and an award-winning jazz composer in his own right.
