Event format

  • 9:45am: Registration. Tea and coffee and a light morning tea will be available.
  • 10am – 11am: CPD presentation by Employment Lawyer Justine Turnbull, Partner at Seyfarth Shaw, which will satisfy the requirements of Regulation 176.
  • 11am – Noon: CPD presentation by Professional Ethics solicitor Linden Barnes, NSW Law Society, which will comply with the requirements of Rule 57.
  • Noon – 1pm: 1 hour break to chat with fellow lawyers, build on your existing professional relationships and form some new relationships. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

About our presenters

  • Justine Turnbull is a Partner in the International Employment Law group of Seyfarth Shaw. Justine specialises in providing advice to major companies on a broad range of employment related matters including employment and post-employment obligations and disputes, executive employment arrangements and discrimination and harassment claims and investigations.Justine. She is editor of and a contributing author of the 2014 LexisNexis employment law publication. Justine is also a founding member and strong supporter of Lawyer Mums Australia.
  • Linden Barnes is an ethics solicitor at the NSW Law Society and is responsible for providing guidance to the profession on their professional ethical obligations. She regularly presents on ethics to solicitors practising in all types of practice models including sole practices, major firms, government and in-house. Linden commenced her career in insurance litigation and then moved in-house, working at major financial organisations.

CPD requirements

Each year, all practitioners in NSW are required to complete Mandatory Continuing Legal Education, also known as continuing professional development (CPD).

Generally you are required to complete 10 CPD units each year. The CPD year will end on 31 March 2015. You must complete your requirements prior to this date.

Every year, practitioners must include at least one CPD unit in each of the following fields:

  1. Ethics and Professional Responsibility
  2. Practice Management and Business skills
  3. Professional Skills

(Rule 57 of the Solicitors’ Rules).

In addition, every 3 years, at least one of your CPD units must cover:

  • ·equal employment opportunity
  • ·discrimination and harassment
  • ·occupational health and safety law
  • ·employment law

(clause 176 of the Legal Profession Regulation 2005).

CPD units undertaken to comply with Regulation 176 may be claimed towards the mandatory fields of either ‘Ethics and Professional Responsibility’ or ‘Practice Management and Business Skills’.
