Nundle Rocks presents...

Suzannah Espie @ The Supper Room, Nundle

Ever seen a Suzannah Espie gig? You’d remember if you had. Because odds are that, from that moment on, you wouldn’t have been satisfied to stop at one. This Melbourne-based singer songwriter has been casting spells over audiences ever since she first took to the stage with her alt-country pop band, GIT, in 1997. A woman of compelling beauty — statuesque, with piercing blue eyes framed by golden curls — she has a voice to match, an intoxicating mix of country, soul, blues and pop. A gentle, sweet trill that can move grown men to tears one moment, or an Aretha-esque hellcat belt that can raise the roof the next; however she sings it though, it’s still unmistakeably Suzannah Espie.

In the eight years they were together, GIT — Espie, Sarah Carroll and Trish Anderson — released five critically acclaimed albums, toured the US three times, and gigged extensively throughout Australia including regular spots at major festivals such as Port Fairy, East Coast Blues and Roots and Woodford.

Since GIT’s natural conclusion, as members’ lives diverged, Espie has kept busy, guesting on countless albums by artists ranging from Mick Thomas, Jeff Lang and Matt Walker to Liz Stringer and Barb Waters. She also performs with Carroll in country outfits the Cartridge Family and the Junes. Most importantly, however, she has released three solo albums: A Few More Days (2005), First and Last Hotel (2009) and most recently, last year’s Sea Of Lights.

Since the release of Sea Of Lights, Espie’s career has taken a dramatic upward trajectory. Recorded while heavily pregnant with her second child, over three 40 degree days in February 2011 with fellow “harmony geeks” Liz Stringer, Chris Altmann and a couple of microphones in Jeff Lang’s shed, Sea Of Lights is a triumph of heavenly harmonied, spine-tingling folk country. “I think I just fantasised about the three of us recording together and what it would sound like,” says Espie.

Sea Of Lights found its way into many best-of lists at year’s end — as did the album tour she undertook with Altmann and Stringer — from The Age EG section and Rhythms magazine, to even scoring the prestigious Nani award from 3RRR’s Banana Lounge Broadcasters (Dave Graney and Elizabeth McCarthy).

Most recently, Espie earned one of the biggest accolades of her career when the Port Fairy Folk Festival named her the 2013 Port Fairy Maton Artist of the Year, joining the honour roll alongside luminaries such as John Butler, Archie Roach, the Waifs and Mick Thomas. It’s an honour that sits nicely beside her also being named the MBAS Blues Performer of the Year in 2008.

As the growing accolades indicate, Suzannah Espie is now an artist at the peak of her powers, riding the wave of her most accomplished release to date in Sea Of Lights. It’s certainly the work she’s most proud of, and considers the most rewarding experience.

“I keep thinking ‘what am I going to do next that will beat that?’.”

She’ll come up with something, of course. Suzannah Espie always does.

As part of Tamworth Taste Festival Suzannah Espie will be performing at The Supper Room, Nundle with guitarist Sean McMahon.
