Combining traditional French gypsy jazz tunes with their dazzling swinging originals the Spyglass Gypsies bring the bygone days of bohemian Paris into today.
Energetic, brilliant and playful, Spyglass Gypsies present a modern take on the traditional gypsy jazz style. Combining French gypsy songs with swinging originals the ensemble brings the bygone days of bohemian Paris into the present day with the lyrical sounds of the accordion, clarinet and the percussive 'la pompe' of gypsy guitars.
Spyglass Gypsies launched their debut self-titled album of original music to a full house in February 2014, and as Australian Arts Council grant recipients they have just returned after taking their music to all corners of the country with their 2015 national tour. Established in 2010 by Ashby and Palmeiro, the group formed through studying and performing together in various jazz projects. They have appeared at many noteable venues and festivals, among these a headlining performance at the 2013 Oz Manouche Gypsy Jazz Festival (Brisbane), the 2014 Red Earth Festival in Karratha, and a recent performance at the Ellington Jazz Club in Perth with luminary Hank Marvin as their special guest. Along with supporting performances for international stars such as Dutch guitar virtuoso Lollo Meier and UK guitarist Remi Harris, Spyglass Gypsies have established themselves as one of the leading ensembles in Australasian Gypsy Jazz.
Personnel: Richard Ashby and Cameron Jones on Manouche guitars, Loretta Palmeiro on clarinet and soprano saxophone, Andrew Scott on accordion and Shannon Haritos
on double bass.
