Avalon is a 12 week old Labrador Retriever and him and other puppies are trained to help people who are living with severely limiting disabilities.

Avalon will become an Assistance Dog and have the same access to public places as a dog that assists the vision impaired. Just as a seeing eye dog provides independence to the vision impaired, the Assistance Dog provides independence to those living with disabilities.

It costs nearly $30,000 a year to train an Assistance Dog. The Trivia afternoon will help raise the funds needed for Avalon and the other puppies to receive the high standard of training needed to provide independence to children and adults with special needs.

Google the word independence and you can find one definition as "freedom from the control, influence, support, aid, or the like, of others."

Only those living in our communities who are highly dependant on others can truly understand how amazing it feels to ask a dog to remove their shoes, open the door, pass the towel or any of the many other tasks an Assistance Dog does.

Assistance Dogs NSW is operated entirely by volunteers and all funds raised go towards the dogs needs. Caring for the dogs and training them is a lot of hard work but it is also a lot of fun.

Most people like to have fun and so do the dogs. So Avalon and a couple of close dog pals will be attending the Trivia afternoon too. You will have a chance to get up close with them and even to cuddle little Digger. He just loves cuddles.

If meeting the dogs isn't a reason to come along then come for the fun. We don't want to spoil it by giving away too much but we can tell you that there will be a lucky door prize to blow your socks off. An announcement about that will be made on our website soon. Visit www.adnsw.org.au. Here is a sneaky clue. It might have something to do with autographs and a popular show on television. Or it might not. :-) We are a tease. You really will need to check out the website as it gets closer. It's a really cool prize.

Lots of other fun and prizes. Seriously! There are prizes, prizes and more prizes. Oh, did I mention that there are even more prizes. There is something for everyone and as it gets closer we will put more information on our website. The prizes are so good that you really should get your tickets early. The lucky door prize alone is enough reason to get your tickets early.

Many people are unaware of exactly what Assistance Dogs can do. Some Hearing Assistance Dogs and are the ears for the hearing impaired or deaf. Others might provide Diabetic Alert and help prevent someone from missing the signs that they are dangerously close to lapsing into a diabetic comma. Or a Medic Alert for someone who suffers severe and life threatening seizures.

Most of us understand that a dog can help someone in a wheelchair. We know the dog can open doors and drawers, push buttons at the traffic lights or in a lift. Did you know they can press a medic alert button, remove shoes and socks and put them away or remove loose clothing? They can even sort the washing, take out the garbage and pick up after the kids.

Some dogs remind people to take their medication. An alarm can be set to do that but will the alarm keep reminding the person until they actually take the medication. The dog will also get help if they can't wake the person.

We deliberately haven't used names and that is to protect the privacy of those recipients. Of course there are also people who are happy to share their stories and we will be sharing some of those with you at the Trivia Afternoon.

You will meet a 16 month old black Australian Labradoodle who is being trained to help a 15 year old boy named William who is profoundly deaf, non-verbal and suffers from severe and life threatening seizures. Come along and here his story, have loads of fun and help raise the funds needed to train our newest puppy, Avalon.

Assistance Dogs NSW Inc. train puppies that grow up to provide independence, save lives and create miracles.

We need a lot of help to make these miracles happen. Simply by attending the Trivia Afternoon you will have a lot of fun and be helping us to train more puppies. Puppies that grow up to be Miracle Assistance Dogs and help people living with severe and life threatening disabilities to enjoy freedom.

Please visit our website at www.adnsw.org.au for more information about the valuable service we provide.
