For some musicians funk is where it’s at: It starts and ends with the groove!

Funk Engine is one such band. Formed in early 2013, the newly minted four piece jazz-funk band has been exciting audiences around Sydney combining funk grooves with jazz harmony and improvisation.

Funk Engine’s musical influences include Sydney jazz fusion outfit, The Subterraneans, electric bassist and composer Steve Hunter and Japanese funk powerhouses, Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro. Other influences include Bob Marley, Weather Report, Jaco Pastorius, James Brown, Parliament, Bootsy Collins, Herbie Hancock and Thelonious Monk, whose dissonant harmonies and playful melodies contribute to the bands style of “bent funk.”

Funk Engine recorded their debut album under Aria award winner Llew Kiek, which was released in November last year at Foundry 616 with great success. They also held a residency and have played  at numerous venues and festivals around NSW and interstate.

Funk Engine returns to Foundry tonight, playing tunes from the new album and some new compositions as well.
