You are invited to attend the Australian Speak Easy Conference for 2016 to be held in the beautiful city of Adelaide. The venue, The Grand Chancellor Hotel is right in the heart of the city surrounded by vibrant cafes, restaurants and very close to great shopping in Rundle Mall and the cultural strip, North Terrace. Make a holiday of it and visit the sandy beaches and the winery areas of the Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley or McLaren Vale. Ferry or fly over to Kangaroo Island for a once in a lifetime experience.
The Conference
The theme of the Conference is "Stuttering: A Wider View" and has the objective of presenting to people who stutter, Speech Pathologists, speech pathology students, parents of children who stutter and other interested parties, information on the latest research, international experiences, strategies to manage stuttering behaviour. It also will provide opportunities for people who stutter to discuss their experiences and successes.
There will be a Teachers’ and Parents’ Seminar on the Saturday morning 9:00 – 12:00 conducted by Dr Janet Beilby. The first hour will be attending Janet's presentation to the conference "“What Clinicians Have Learned from Children Who Stutter and their Parents”. A split session will then be conducted by Janet titled “Practical Strategies for Helping a Child/Student who Stutters in and Beyond the Classroom”. $30pp including morning tea.
The Conference will coincide with Stuttering Awareness Day (22nd October) with public awareness being an emphasis on the Saturday of the Conference. The Friday will feature research and information especially relevant to Speech Pathologists and students while the Sunday morning will have a focus on family issues and self-help.
All Conference fees include morning and afternoon teas and lunch (no lunch on Sunday).
Speakers
Dr Simone Arnott is the Deputy Head of School of Allied Health (Melbourne) and the National Professional Practice Education Coordinator (Speech Pathology) at Australian Catholic University. She is also an honorary research fellow at the University of Sydney. Her doctoral research involved a randomised controlled trial of group delivery of the Lidcombe Program of early stuttering intervention. She has worked in a variety of clinical and academic positions as a speech pathologist, clinical educator, placement coordinator, lecturer, researcher and specialist trainer in stuttering during her career. Simone regularly presents stuttering workshops and professional development in the area of student supervision and training . She has also recently developed an online Group Lidcombe Program training package for speech pathologists, in collaboration with the Australian Stuttering Research Centre.
Dr Janet Beilby is Senior Lecturer and Clinical Educator at Curtin University in Western Australia and has been a lecturer, researcher and clinician in the field of stuttering for over 30 years. Dr. Beilby has treated thousands of clients, trained hundreds of students and been awarded over half a million dollars in research funds investigating varying aspects of stuttering disorders. In 2015 she was made a fellow of Speech Pathology Australia and was awarded the prestigious International Clinician of the Year Award by the International Fluency Association.
Dr Janet Beilby has over 30 years’ experience working with children/students and their teachers. She will present some of her most relevant research findings that show how children/students who stutter thrive with a teacher who has a balanced and up-to-date perspective regarding their stuttering. She will also discuss how improving self-regulation of general behaviour can help fluency improvements with suggestions and strategies from her Resilience Training Programme.
Professor Nan Bernstein Ratner (will join us via video Skype): Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences, University of Maryland, College Park. She is a Fellow and Honors recipient of the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association (ASHA). Her primary areas of research are fluency development and disorder (stuttering), psycholinguistics and the role of adult input and interaction in child language development. The author of numerous research articles, chapters and edited texts, she is the co-author of A Handbook on Stuttering (6th ed) with the late Oliver Bloodstein, as well as The Development of Language (7th ed) and Psycholinguistics (2nd ed.), both with Jean Berko Gleason. She is a Board-recognized Specialist in Child Language Disorders. In 2006, Professor Bernstein Ratner received the Distinguished Researcher award from the International Fluency Association. In 2014, she was made a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
Dr Elaine Blumgart will present on Social Anxiety and Stuttering. Elaine is a speech pathologist actively engaged in treatment, reviewing of academic papers and research for the past 25 years. Her particular research interest concerns the quality of life and mental health of adults who stutter. Her recent research involved 400 people; 200 adults who stutter and 200 adults who do not stutter. Elaine is based in Sydney.
Professor Elizabeth Cardell received her Bachelor’s degree, research Master’s degree, and PhD from The University of Queensland. Currently, she is Deputy Head of the School of Allied Health Sciences at Griffith University and is the Head of Speech Pathology, where she co-ordinates fluency lectures and clinical training in stuttering management. Elizabeth has over 25 years of clinical experience working with older children, adolescents, and adults who stutter. Her current research interests in stuttering include training students through simulated learning experiences, new models of service delivery (e.g., intensive distributed), and the effectiveness of different cognitive-based therapies in fluency management.
Peter Dhu, Director of Public Speaking Dynamics and public speaking coach.
The Power of Vulnerability (Vulnerability is not a Dirty Word)
Peter Dhu is an experienced speaker, trainer and coach in the area of presentation skills, public speaking and overcoming fear. For over 20 years Peter has helped thousands of people overcome their fear of public speaking and become more confident and effective in the delivery of their presentations. He has helped people find their voices and their passion so that they can now share these with the world with courage and conviction through their own presentations. Peter has also studied extensively in the area of business and leadership, culminating in his Masters of Business and Administration and Diploma in Professional Coaching. Peter has extensive experience in the area of business communication, presentation skills and personal effectiveness.
Violet Dhu – The Importance of Being Assertive in Your Communication
Violet Dhu has over fifteen years’ experience in helping people develop their interpersonal and communication skills. As an experienced social worker, speaker, trainer, and graduate of the Harvard University Negotiation Institute, Violet has worked with many people who are dealing with difficult situations in their workplace and are struggling to be heard. These include difficult conversations, bullying, workplace conflict, anxiety, leadership challenges and low self-confidence. Violet provides training and coaching and also keynote speaks in the areas of assertive communication, interpersonal skills, difficult conversations, office etiquette, nonverbal communication and women in leadership. In her career, Violet has helped thousands of people to speak up, communicate effectively, move into leadership and to participate in conversations confidently.
Dr Mark Irwin (ASEA President) – Advocacy: Why , What, How……. how consumers and speech pathologists might work together to improve advocacy efforts for people who stutter.
Dr. Mark Irwin has held various leadership positions within the stuttering self-help movement at both a national and international level. These include serving as current President of the Australian Speak Easy Association and Chairman of the International Fluency Association’s Self –Help and Advocacy Committee. From 2001 to 2007 he was Board Chairman of International Stuttering Association (ISA), the umbrella organisation for national and international self-help and support groups from throughout the world. He has given numerous presentations including at the inaugural African Conference as well as stuttering conferences of the ISA, International Fluency Association, British Stammering Association and National Stuttering Association of America. He has also contributed articles to the annual international stuttering online conference as well as to books, magazines and newsletters of various professional bodies.
Geoff Johnston (ASEA Executive Officer) – “The Key: Changing our Speaking Identity”.
Geoff is semi-retired and lives at Strathalbyn, an hour south/east of Adelaide. He has been involved in the Australian Speak Easy Association since about 1990 holding a number of positions. Geoff worked as the Regional Director of the McGuire Programme in Australia for 13 years retiring from that position at the end of 2014. His own personal experiences and working closely with hundreds of people who stutter has given Geoff a thorough understanding of the dynamics involved in stuttering behaviour. He is passionate about helping people who stutter to improve their communication and achieve their life’s ambitions.
Geoff Martin (ASEA Vice-President) and President of Western Australian Speak Easy Association – “My Experiences and How We Can Help Each Other”. Geoff has been a stutterer for all of his life however, heavily covert. After many unsuccessful attempts at treatment, he joined the McGuire program at age 56.
Current Status: Age 71, Certified Coach McGuire program (International), State President Speak Easy Program (Western Australia), Vice President Speak Easy Association (Australia), Coordinator, Fund Raising Speak Easy, Member 3 Toastmasters Clubs —currently assisting state officers in forming new Toastmasters clubs in WA. Geoff’s speech currently is strong.
Scott Monson, Management Trainer, Life Coach and Motivational Speaker – “Learned Helplessness, Fixed Mindsets and Relapse – and how to adopt a mindset for success…”.
Scott Monson was 35 years old when he joined the McGuire Programme and had stuttered all of his life. Despite 30 years of intensive programmes and treatments, Scott achieved little long term success with speaking fluently. He would avoid making phone calls and delegated all his work presentations to staff as ‘professional development’. Now, his voice is my tool of trade as a professional trainer and executive coach, in addition to his role as a course instructor and primary coach of the Australian programme. He truly has gone from a life filled with anxiety and avoidance to one of opportunity and new horizons….and believes that others can too!
Professor Mark Onslow is the Foundation Director of the Australian Stuttering Research Centre at the Faculty of Health Sciences, The University of Sydney. His background is speech pathology, in which field he holds a Bachelor of Applied Science, Master of Applied Science, and a Doctorate. During the period 2004-2008 he was a Principal Research Fellow of the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, being the only speech pathologist to have received that distinction.
Dr Michelle Swift: Michelle is a lecturer and clinical educator in fluency disorders for the Flinders University Speech Pathology program. She has been employed at Flinders University since 2007, and completed her PhD in early childhood stuttering through the Australian Stuttering Research Centre, the University of Sydney, in 2012. Michelle is involved in the teaching and clinical education programs for both the undergraduate and graduate entry speech pathology programs at Flinders University. She is a clinical educator for the Flinders University Fluency Clinic. Michelle has specific interests in fluency disorders, the lived experience of individuals with communication and swallowing disorders, and child behaviour and mental health. She has collaborated in research projects with the Department of General Practice, Flinders University and Southern Adelaide Health Service – Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services since 2007.
