A night of SWING, JAZZ & SOUL in a 1930's Boutique Lounge with the Escalators for their 'FROM THE HIP' Album Launch tour.

The Escalators tip their fedoras to the sophistication of Swing,
the grooves of Detroit,
the rhythmic pulse of Jamaica,
& the funk of New Orleans.

Breathing new life into great songs of the 20th Century, and crafting original compositions that honour their jazz, soul & reggae roots, The Escalators infuse it all with fresh sea breezes from their South Coast (NSW) home.

The gorgeous tone of Jenny Blunden's voice embraces you & steals your heart. Setting the scene is The Escalators’ instrumental tapestry, all parts woven with subtlety & purpose. Lachlan Mackenzie’s guitar, all harmony & texture, is draped over a rhythmic framework rich in interplay between Bradley Parson's upright bass & the drum kit captained by Hayden Moore.

The Escalators approached their debut EP “Felix” (2014) as a concept album: to draw on classic songs from the 1930s to the 1960s, and infuse them with exotic influences from all corners of their record collection. Thus, The Girl From Ipanema becomes a Brazilian beauty on a Jamaican holiday. And a quaint tune from 'The Sound of Music’ turns into a funky soundtrack to a 1970s car chase. Nestled amongst these reinventions is the irresistible original composition “Hide & Seek” floating on a reggae pulse.

Weighing in at 7 tracks, their latest release “From The Hip” sees The Escalators craft 5 original compositions that honour their swing, soul & reggae roots, and pay their respects on 2 jazz standards.
The studio philosophy was simple: capture the energy, & record live with minimal cosmetic surgery. The result breathes & sounds fresh to the last beat; the listener is in the room with the band.
Production is by the best ears in the business: Syd Green (South Coast) & Paul Pilsneniks (Byron Bay), funded by an Escape ARTfest grant & with money saved by cruising the van downhill in neutral while on tour.
Song writing covers a broad range of subject matter, with commentary on fashion (Get Hip), consumerism (Hastings Street Blues), flirting on the dance floor (Jungle Jive) & relationships (Open Fire).
