Melbourne folk artist Ryan Downey will celebrate the release of his upcoming mini-LP ‘Me & Her’ with an interstate tour this April.
Praised by Tone Deaf as ‘a true treasure of Melbourne’ with ‘a live performance that leaves you lost for words’, Ryan’s brand of folk is fresh, touching and ambitious, as first introduced to us through his debut EP Familiar Ground (performed under his previous moniker, Venice Music). His sound is defined by his rich and smooth baritone vocals, described by Mess & Noise as
‘haunting, with such weight that we’re drawn immediately in.’ Paired with evocative lyrics and his
handsome nylon-string guitar, his voice is dually tender and commanding - a sense of joy and calm
amidst the incomprehensible.
Ryan was hand-picked by New York-based duo Luluc to support them for all their Victorian shows
on their 2014 Australian Tour. He also supported US artist John Murry that same year.
All set to record his debut album at the beginning of 2015, there was an abrupt change in trajectory
when a broken arm left Ryan unable to play any instruments for 2 months. Not one to sit still, Ryan
embarked on an experimental side project titled ‘Me & Her’ - a completely a cappella record of
covers by female songwriters, along with two original songs of his own.
Ryan released the first single from this mini LP in October 2015 - ‘Tidings’. This single featured a
stunning video made by Melbourne director Alex Badham. When premiering the video, The Music
wrote '...beguiling baritone vocals [that] push and pull and float atop the instrumental tides,
conspiring to deliver an enchanting, laid-back package of astonishing a cappella.'
Catch Ryan Downey live at The Newsagency on Thursday 7th April with special guest Brendon
Moon.
