The night will give you a taste of what is coming up in this year’s Festival in September with performances by of Sacred music from East Turkistan, China, the Balkans and contemporary Australia.

Muqam Rak - Shohrat Tursun

For the first time in Australia, the UNESCO protected Uyghur song cycle, Muqam Rak, will be performed for the Sydney Sacred Music Festival 2018.

Led by one of the world’s best Uyghur performers, this transformative performance of ancient culture and Sufi influenced sacred music from the Silk Road will feature Shohrat Tursun on Dutar (2 string long neck lute) and vocals.

The Love of a Mystic -Sacred Rituals from the Balkans

Come and be moved by ancient traditions of the Balkans. Eclectic seven piece ensemble Balkanski Bus, led by choreographer and musician Yorgo Kaporis features Bulgarian Kaval player Ivailo Karamanliev, with Linda Marr on vocals, Vasili Haralambous – gaida and frula, Graham Witt – tambura and bass, Viktor Atanasovski - guitar and Peter Kouvelis – percussion.

Woman’s Gathering -Reflections on the Sacred

Blue Mary uplifts and celebrates our diverse identity through their music and lyrics from woman’s oral histories. Led by singer /songwriter Maria Mitar, Blue Mary creates spiritually inspired music, laced with deep melody, harmonies, and world music, creating a sacred world pop sound, which represents the cultural diversity of Australia.

Sacred Music from China

Dr Nicholas Ng is a composer/performer who has appeared at Sydney Opera House, Merkin Concert Hall (New York) and at festivals such as KunstenFESTIVALdesarts (Brussels), Melbourne International Arts Festival, OzAsia Festival (Adelaide) and Push Festival (Vancouver). He is passionate about meditation, spirituality and healing through sound, and has been involved in the Sydney Sacred Music Festival since 2012.

Nicholas (Erhu – Chinese violin) will perform a contemporary composition that draws from the sacred moment in the attempt to connect with the ancient past with long-time meditator Lu LIU (Lulu,an internationally renowned virtuoso on the pipa (4-stringed Chinese lute). Lulu has appeared extensively in China, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong as. Highlights include “On the Wire” (BBC Radio), “Play me a story – Nutcracker” at Sydney Opera House, and the World Peace Festival in South Korea with an audience of 7000.
