waywardbreed began in 2009 as a moniker for Melbourne songwriter Justin Avery's sweet, melancholic folk songs. Avery spent three years back and forth between Melbourne, Australia and Europe (based in Berlin) touring extensively on the back of his debut album 'rising vicious', passing through Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Norway, Poland and the Czech Republic.

Armed with a collection of songs written while touring Europe, Avery returned to Melbourne at the end of 2011 to record his follow-up album 'gathering for the feast'. The album was recorded with violinist/multi-instrumentalist Andrew Watson in a two-room apartment during 2012. The highly regarded 'gathering for the feast' was released on vinyl in early 2013 through Melbourne label Hawk Moth Records and featured on a number of best albums of 2013 lists.

From a solo project, waywardbreed subsequently grew into a 7-piece band, playing throughout Melbourne and beyond to considerable acclaim. In late 2015, the full band returned to the studio to record waywardbreed's third album 'brother songs' (recorded by Alison Ferrier, mixed by Jeff Lang and mastered by Simon Grounds) in a race against the imminent arrival of Avery's first child, a baby girl. He won: just.

'brother songs' is out now on vinyl/digital through Hawk Moth Records.

Catherine Traicos

From Nashville’s Bluebird Café to the Live at Heart Festival in Orebro Sweden and to our own Sydney Opera House, Catherine has serenaded audiences with her hauntingly beautiful voice. A voice that has both equal parts delicate fragility and impressive strength. This beautifully dusty blues voice paired with her delicately grungy finger picked electric guitar is a match made in music heaven.
