Vocalist Rebecca Davey brings elements of her musical idols to her performance – the great female Blues vocalists of the 1920s and 30s. Artists such as Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Victoria Spivey, Mamie Smith and similar bold women of their time, have influenced Rebecca, both in her vocal delivery and performance. Together as a 4-piece band, Dreamboogie re-imagine and reinterpret the songs of those great trailblazing Blues performers for today’s audiences, using contemporary sounds and fresh arrangements, whilst retaining the essential spirit and attitude of the music. Old Blues with new ‘tude.

Rewinding the musical clock to a time when cocaine and reefer were legal, cultural dynamism was at a peak, modern womanhood was redefined and the first sexual revolution was under way, Sugar Bowl Hokum perform songs that draw on these themes. The music of some very feisty almost forgotten trail blazers makes up a large part of the repertoire. Memphis Minnie, Barrel House Annie and Rosetta Howard songs are performed in different arrangements than the listener may not be used to but always capturing the essence of the song and the times.
