AMA (NSW) Director of Professional Services Ms Helen Winklemann hits the road to provide training and support to the medical professionals and practice managers in all aspects of employment and workplace relations.

These training sessions are free of charge for AMA members and (when you think it can’t get any better, it can) there will be social drinks and networking opportunities after the training!

Employer Essentials: Contracts and Fair Work Act Compliance 
Overview:
This session is part of our new “Employer Essentials” series for private practice doctors who employ staff, or intend to do so in future. It is a foundation module, suitable both for those will little pre-existing knowledge of the topic, or as a refresher/self-audit for those with more experience or in-depth understanding.
Content:
Participants will:
  • Learn about the key risks for practice principals under the Fair Work Act, including personal liability for civil penalties (eg, for sole trader doctors, company directors, key decision makers and anyone else ‘involved in’ breaches of the Act or Awards);
  • Identify key strategies for managing those risks, including identifying the key compliance obligations under the Fair Work Act, and assessing whether or how their own practice meets them;
  • Learn how to read, understand and comply with the two key Modern Awards that apply to employed practice staff; and
  • Review and discuss AMA (NSW)’s newly updated suite of contracts for private practice employees, including:
    - how they help protect your practice
    - how to access them
    - what they say (and why)
    - which one to choose (and when)
    - how to implement them in a manner appropriate for your practice
    - the importance of ongoing review of contracts.
Who should attend?
Any doctors who:
  • employ staff directly or are involved in staffing decisions for their practice (with or without a practice manager);
  • intend to hire new staff or renegotiate any new staff contracts/arrangements soon;
  • haven’t reviewed their employees’ contracts for a while (or who don’t have any in place!); and/or
  • aren’t aware of their compliance obligations under the Fair Work Act and/or Modern Awards.

  • 2 x Modern Awards
  • checklists and summaries to assist in ensuring Fair Work Act / Modern Award Compliance and employment contract best practice / risk management
Business Basics: Private Practice Business Models  
Overview:
This session is part of our new “Business Basics” series for doctors in private practice (or intending to move into private practice). It is a foundation module, suitable both for those will little pre-existing knowledge of the topic, or as a refresher/self-audit for those with more experience or in-depth understanding.
Content:
Participants will:
  • Briefly review/refresh on the key legal concepts and statutes underpinning/affecting private practice business structures
  • Review the business models most frequently adopted by private practice doctors and specialists
  • Hear insights from Cutcher & Neale about the financial/taxation impacts and opportunities associated with different models
  • Learn more from Tress Cox about the key legal contract and documentation requirements needed to implement each model effectively
  • Discuss and consider the pros and cons of different models, and how to manage the key risks associated each of them (this will include a Q&A session, facilitated by Helen Winklemann).
Who should attend?
Any doctors who:
  • are considering a move into private practice;
  • are already in private practice, but aren’t sure if their current business structure is right for them;
  • haven’t reviewed their existing business structures or commercial arrangements for a while; and/or
  • are considering a change of structure, or are preparing to sell/transfer an existing practice.
