Dr Tan's lecture will focus on the history and culture of the Sze Yap (Wuyi) and the UNESCO World heritage architecture of Guangdong Province built in the late 19th-century and early 20th-centuryand their Australian links.
Professor Selia Jinhua Tan Selia Tan is an historian of the history and social development of the hometown society of the overseas Chinese from Guangdong Province.
Dr Tan is a Senior Researcher and Associate Professor at the Research Center for Overseas Chinese Hometown Culture of China, Wuyi University, and former Director of the Kaiping Diaolou Research Department of Kaiping Municipal Government.
Dr Tan is also a trained and practiced architectural heritage conservationist, working at the Kaiping Diaolou Research Department where she helped set up the Kaiping Diaolou Archives and the World Cultural Heritage exhibition in Kaiping. Professor Tan was one of the key researchers in the preparation of the Kaiping Diaolou and Villages World Cultural Heritage Application Dossier and the Kaiping Diaolou and Villages Management Plan submitted to UNESCO. Dr Tan was an important consultant of architectural conservation projects during the World Cultural Heritage listing application of the Kaiping diaolou (succeeded in 2007) and Fujian Tulou (succeeded in 2008).
Professor Tan has also been closely working with Stanford University of the Chinese Railroad Worker Project since 2012, and has close research relationships with the University of Hong Kong and the University of British Columbia. Dr Selia Tan is now a consultant for many cultural heritage conservation projects in China, including the Kaiping Cangdong Cultural Heritage Conservation Project, which was awarded the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Cultural Heritage Conservation Award of Merit in 2015.
Dr Tan is the author of A Research on the Architectural Ornamentation of Kaiping Diaolou and Villages (2013) and A Journey of the Kaiping Dwellings (2011) and editor of, A Humble Wish: A Family Story of Overseas Chinese (2013).
