Two great pianists on two pianos, in a performance where the jazz and the classical duck and weave in a way that feels ‘just right’. Performing together throughout Australia for over a decade to acclaim and standing ovations, Simon Tedeschi and Kevin Hunt return in 2017 with a new program of irresistible classical and jazz works, centred around Hunt’s own Painted Piano Suite.

Kevin Hunt's doctoral studies about the Australian sound of the Stuart & Sons piano took him to far west NSW, to work with Menindee’s indigenous students who belong to the Paakantji and Ngiyampaa language groups. As the music students at Menindee Central School worked on composing the ‘Painted Piano Blues’, now a movement in this Painted Piano Suite, the art students painted panels for the Stuart piano, which will be displayed at each performance. The result is a moving work celebrating connections between indigenous youth and their country, and the joy and the gift of creating music within our communities.

Alongside music from Bach and Debussy to Ellington, Monk and Oscar Peterson, Tedeschi + Hunt also revisit Gershwin’s much-lauded masterpiece, Rhapsody in Blue in a phenomenal arrangement by these two maestros of the piano.

“Simon has always loved jazz and can really ‘dive’ into that jazz feeling; and I have always loved classical music for its detail of sound production and composition,” said Kevin Hunt. “The music we play together constantly weaves between jazz and classical forms, and now after years of playing together our improvising has become an exciting part of the performance too.”

Says Tedeschi of performing with Hunt, “What excites me is this fusion of our personalities, and the unique musical recipe this creates. I hope that’s what you get from our performance – the sense that two very different individuals, united in their love of music, each bring something different, yet equally exciting, to the stage.”

What the Australian press have said about Tedeschi + Hunt...

“Together they are dynamite... Top notch!” - Mosman Daily

“They were still wanting more from pianists Simon Tedeschi and Kevin Hunt when the performance finally ended over two hours later. Whether [this] is really a cabaret act or not seemed to matter less than the richly playful quality of what the performers were doing with a lot of jazz, a little classical and a bit of original.” - Canberra Times

“it was a night when two of our finest pianists from the realms of jazz and classical music had a Steinway standoff, their facial expressions mirroring their delight as they fired off each other in a clever combination of prepared arrangements and good, old fashioned jamming... [and] left us all wondering ‘who could ask for anything more?” - Manly Daily

“Australian pianists Simon Tedeschi (classical) and Kevin Hunt (jazz) complement each other’s techniques and sonorities. Tedeschi could deliver Debussy’s Prelude from Suite Bergamasque or Claire de Lune, or Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite with exacting class, and Kevin Hunt is capable of spinning the best from Gershwin’s I Got Rhythm or Dave Brubeck’s Blue Rondo a la Turk. But put them together and a new music sensation emerges. A new dynamism lights the product. It is Mother Goose like you’ve never heard it, embellished with quirky rhythms and feathery runs, but suave and evocative just the same....Debussy’s ‘Footprints in the snow’ is pensive and sparse, more jazz reflection than impressionist sonority...just listen to what soft jazz shading can do to vintage romantic. Ellington’s C Jam Blues is a classical jazz finale.” - Courier Mail
