Synopsis

What do you do when your country is at war, your town is at war, your friends are at war and there’s a war inside your head? You run – Angela Betzien.

WAR CRIMES - the story of five teenage girls, fighting to earn respect in a culture of masculinity and mateship, violence against women, misogyny and xenophobia. Inspired by a spate of attacks on war memorials, WAR CRIMES references landmark historical events such as the Cronulla riots and the ANZAC story to interrogate race and gender relations in contemporary Australia.

“Betzien’s greatest achievement is to present such a sharply sketched, detailed picture of Australian society using five characters who we wouldn’t usually put at its centre” – Daily Review
