The Hon. Malcolm Turnbull, MP, Federal Member for Wentworth, Shadow Treasurer

Malcolm Turnbull was elected to the House of Representatives as the Federal Member for Wentworth following the federal election on 9 October 2004. Malcolm was appointed Minister for the Environment and Water Resources on 30 January 2007 having held the position of Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister since 27 January 2006. Following the election in November 2007 he was appointed Shadow Treasurer.

Malcolm Turnbull was a partner of Goldman Sachs & Co and Chairman of its Australian business from 1997 to 2001.  Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, Malcolm was Managing Director of Turnbull & Partners Limited, an investment banking firm established in 1987.  From 1980 to 1987 Malcolm practised law in Sydney, principally as an advocate.  Among other important pieces of litigation he successfully defended Peter Wright, the author of “Spycatcher”. Prior to legal practice Malcolm was a journalist writing mainly on political and legal subjects for several media outlets including  the Nine Network, The Bulletin and The Sunday Times of London.

Malcolm has co-founded a number of Australian technology companies including OzEmail Limited.

Malcolm studied law as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University (BCL 1980) after graduating BA LLB from the University of Sydney in 1977.  He is the author of three books “The Spycatcher Trial” (1989), “The Reluctant Republic” (1993) and “Fighting for the Republic” (1999) and he has written and spoken extensively on a wide range of political subjects including demographic change, tax reform, water conservation, climate change and urban sustainability.

Malcolm was formerly the Honorary Federal Treasurer of the Liberal Party and Chairman of the Menzies Research Centre.  Malcolm was Chairman of the Australian Republican Movement from 1993 to 2000.

Malcolm has been married to Lucy Hughes since 1980 and they have two children.

Kyle is highly regarded for his knowledge of business, transport and motoring issues affecting the people of the Hunter and Central Coast Regions and is regularly called on to provide advice on better and safer local roads to the highest levels of government.
