Chet Baker was one of the most influential jazz musicians of the 21st century.With his matinee idol looks, smoky voice and smokier horn, Chet Baker was the Caucasian lothario voice of a generation. And though his life ended tragically and far too soon, his legacy lingers long in the jazz pantheon.

Baker shot to fame in the 1950s for his extraordinary trumpeting talent, playing early gigs with jazz luminaries like Stan Getz and Charlie Parker. He later joined the Gerry Mulligan Quartet, which had a hit with their dreamy version of 'My Funny Valentine', still an understated work of genius today. Baker was also a singer, with a beguilingly smooth voice that only broadened his appeal.

However, Baker quickly acquired a heroin addiction that was to see him in and out of prison, pawning instruments, beaten up, and more, over the next three decades. Still, he had something of a comeback in the 1980s (including playing with Elvis Costello), and maintained a musical career right up until he fell to his death from an Amsterdam hotel window in 1988

Though his life was a mess, and his heroin addiction stole his poster-boy good looks, his music had a profound impact on the jazz world and still lives on today as hugely influential to many performers.Many of his hits are still jazz standards to this day.

Presenting these standards, in a tribute to Chet Baker is “Simon Drew and the Old Bay Road trio.”Simon Drew is a jazz vocalist and trumpeter, but more than that, he’s a storyteller and an artist. His tasteful interpretations of jazz standards have been praised by people all around the globe, and he has gained the reputation of being able to turn jazz-agnostics into jazz-believers through his authentic yet reserved style.Together with Brisbane musicians Rohan Somasekaran (piano), Murray Donald (guitar) and John Smallcombe (bass) they will pay tribute to the undying memory of Chet Baker in a gorgeous collection of west coast jazz standards.With hits such as ‘My funny valentine’,‘There will never be another you’ and ‘Embraceable you’, you’ll be taken on a trip down Memory Lane.
