It’s not quite Christmas – or Summer – but at 3pm on Sunday 25 November in St Augustine’s Church Hall, Balmain, Coro Austral will present Navidad en Verano (A Summer Christmas)in anticipation of both!

Navidad en Verano celebrates the diverse range of choral works to be found in the various musical traditions of Spain and Latin America.

The centrepiece is the Australian premiere performance of Misa V by Beatriz Corona, an acclaimed Cuban composer whose unique style is informed and influenced by traditional, folkloric and popular music of Cuba as well as classical music of Cuba and Europe. According to Artistic Director Margot McLaughlin, this work does not sound traditionally Cuban, but it is, and presents a new sound to Australian ears.

This concert also features Ariel Ramirez’ Navidad Nuestra (Our Nativity), which provides a distinctive Latin American perspective on the story of Christmas with the brilliant use of vibrant folk and dance rhythms of the various provinces of Argentina.

In Navidad en Verano the audience will also be treated to a delightful mix of popular, traditional and contemporary songs from Spain, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, Colombia and Australia, with compositions ranging from 15th to 21st centuries, many relating to the themes of Advent and Christmas.

Coro Austral will be joined in this performance by well-respected pianist and Latin American music specialist Jane Andino.

Since Margot formed Coro Austral in 2010, it has gained an excellent reputation for the skilled and authentic presentation of Spanish and Latin American choral works as well as music from other traditions worldwide.
