Details
Big Fork Theatre is excited to welcome Jim Robinson to Brisbane for some special guest workshops.
Working with one instructor and one accompanist (Dennis Curley), we will lead participants through a series of exercises designed to heighten their awareness of music as inspiration when creating improvised scenes. Specifically, we will help participants identify musical declarations; use this musical accompaniment to create specific relationships; turn musical suggestions into third characters in the scenes; and work with musical accompaniment to sustain mood and themes in improvisation. These skills can enhance both long-form and short-form improvisation.
This workshop is open to anyone who has had formal improvisational training.
About Jim
Jim Robinson has a dual-career in improvisation and psychology. He is an alumnus of the mainstage at the Brave New Workshop in Minneapolis, Minnesota and has over 25 years of experience as a university professor at St. Catherine University and the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. Along with his doctorate in psychology from the University of Southern California, Jim has studied improvisation with Paul Sills in Door County, Wisconsin; in the Groundlings education program in Los Angeles; and with the Brave New Institute in Minneapolis. Jim has taught improvisation in Nepal, Myanmar, India, Mexico, Panama, and most recently in Pakistan as a Fulbright Specialist. He was cast-lead onboard the Disney Magic’s Off-Beat Comedy Club and is currently an original member of The Theater of Public Policy. He is co-founder of Table Salt Productions in Minneapolis, an independent theater company dedicated to producing original works from local artists. His work with crisis intervention trainings for police officers and social workers further combines his interests. Jim hails from Riverside, California.
