Nothing beats a good story, set to an infectious melody. Throw exceptional musical prowess, undeniable stage chemistry and and an energetic live show into the mix, and the result is something truly extraordinary.
Such is the case with Sydney trio St Joan, who building from their folk roots, have established themselves as one of the hardest working DIY acts in the country.
Fusing a melting pot of psychedelia, blues, indie and folk, drawing influence from the story-telling of Jeff Buckley and sinister melodies of Radiohead, St Joan's show is both vulnerable and dynamic.
The trio took their show on the road around the country in 2017 for their first tour, hitting all the staple locations on the 15 date run, and branching out to the regional centers of Coffs Harbour, Maroochydore and Nowra along the way. Often playing for up to 3 hours, the experience was foundational in cementing the band's ferocious work ethic, creating a telepathic stage language between singer/guitarist Dan, Bassist Chris and drummer Al.
Whether it be flying through their collection of accessible rock-pop treats, or jamming through psychedelic roller coaster epics, the band have developed a style that is both undeniable, yet inexplicable, best summed up in their vulnerable performances. This is captured perfectly in the band's latest and darkest offering 'First Blood'
Recorded at Cooper Lane Studios with Chris Collins (Tigertown, Skeggs, Ruby Fields) the song combines the drive of contemporary rock acts Holy Holy and Middle Kids with the washed out atmospherics of War on Drugs and Beach House.
Recounting the breakdown of the family unit and the devastation caused by adultery, First Blood is a vulnerable new creative direction for St Joan, reigniting the often overlooked art of storytelling through song.
