Anita O'Day at 100 with Nerissa Campbell Quartet

With her velvety voice and charming stage presence NY-based vocalist Nerissa Campbell brings her Anita O’Day centennial tribute celebration to Jazz by The Bay this June. Though a distinctive artist in her own right, her “smoky voiced songs of good bourbon and bad love affairs” (Time Out London) share comparisons with O’Day's essence of cool.Featuring classics like “That Old Feeling”, “It’s Alright with Me”, and “Honeysuckle Rose” Campbell honours O’Day’s hip spirit in this special centennial celebration.

Nerissa Campbell's music is a fine blend of styles dipped in a smoky beer batter of late-night living. There's an easy, swingin' film noir feeling that evokes dark bars and mystery dames and she is wistful and melancholy, like Billie Holiday singing a Nick Cave song. The blues is here, too, but it plays hide and seek with space and sound, creating a depth of feeling beyond the obvious. A graduate of WAAPA, Nerissa has called NYC home since 2001, performing regularly at well-known haunts such as 55 Bar, The Jazz Gallery, Fat Cat, (Le) Poisson Rouge, Zinc, & Rockwood Music Hall. A long term member of NY’s Balinese Gamelan Dharma Swara, she has also been the feature vocalist in post-metal band, A Storm of Light, and was the recipient of an Australian Arts Council New Works grant for her album, After The Magic, a project that explores the use of Balinese Gamelan, a jazz trio, fleeting guitars and moody instrumentals.
