Chris McNulty Quartet, Jazz by the Bay special event
Returning to Perth as the recipient of the Bundanon Trust, Prelude composer-in-residence award, formerly NYC based jazz vocalist, Chris McNulty is joined by the brilliant trio of Daniel Susnjar, Pete Jeavons and Tom O’Halloran. This is Ms. McNulty's first appearance at the Jazz by the Bay festival and promises to be a night of hard swinging music, interspersed with high energy improvisations and mesmerising ballads.
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear four of Australia’s finest jazz musicians performing together for one evening only.
LIVE Performance Reviews for McNulty:
“…McNulty prefers to linger over tunes, exploring and elongating them, reinterpreting, and transfusing well-worn melodies with perfectly creative timing and phrasing, while allowing ample time for soloists. There were some beautiful exchanges between Mike Stewart’s tenor sax and McNulty on “When the World Was Young”, and “On the Street Where You Live.”. An absolute showstopper was a duet of guitar and vocal for the Burt Bacharach composition “Make It Easy on Yourself” where, at a slow tempo, McNulty wove a soulful descant on the melody over soft guitar chords to frame the song with a quiet poignant delicacy. Cole Porter’s “All of You” gave everyone space to solo. It was a showcase of world-class talent and professionalism.”
- John McBeath, the Advertiser, Adelaide, Australia
“..Wednesday evening in Los Gatos, CA, a forest fire nearly broke out in the lovely grove of tall sequoia trees on the “Plazz” when Chris McNulty, the fire-engine of a jazz vocalist lit up the scene with her smoking hot stuff. It was a good thing that nobody yelled FIRE because the plaza was mobbed with people who responded to her dynamic style with applause and yells. Remarkably, she had just come from Edinburgh via NYC to Northern California, but you couldn’t tell she was jet lagged by the way she belted out numbers. In fact, she commented that the audience so inspired her and special guest Paul Bollenback, guitarist extraordinaire, that they were running long because they didn’t want to stop..”
- Dr Bob – Los Gatos, Jazz on the Plazz Festival, CA
“We were privileged to witness one of the best jazz concerts we have had in Perth for some time…..With great arrangements of tunes such as “How Little We Know”, “Last Night When We Were Young”, “Meaning of the Blues” , Burt Bacharach’s “Make it Easy On Yourself”, “On the Street Where You Live”, “How are Things in Glocca Morra”, Cole Porter’s “All of You,“My Romance” and finally Chris’ original “Roamin”. Chris is a great jazz singer and teamed with Paul Bollenback on guitar we were treated to a night out on the New York jazz scene – and they did the traveling!"
