Workshop outline (3 hrs)

NSW Department of Primary Industries (1 hr)
This session will showcase teaching resources, student workbooks and design portfolios created by DPI to deliver the Agriculture and Food technologies; Digital technologies and Engineered systems contexts of the new syllabus. Particular focus will be given to the Tocal Virtual Farm with teachers using the technology to complete a ‘treasure hunt’ activity and map their own school using a free online mapping platform. Teachers will also have the opportunity to take a virtual tour of the Tocal farm enterprises. BYO: laptop and a smartphone or tablet with the Kahoot! app downloaded.

Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (1 hr)

Tomatoes are one of the most popular edible plants with over 3000 different varieties available, ranging from heritage to modern hybrid breeds. The RAS of NSW presents the ‘Tomato Time’ unit of work for high school teachers, complete with lesson plans and a resource kit. Engage your students in agriculture and food technology through hands on activities including soil investigations, growing activities, identification of production problems, exploration of supply chains, processing and manufacture of value added goods with a focus on the importance of sustainability in our food supply.

Primary Industries Education Foundation of Australia - PIEFA (1 hr)

Let’s go Nuts!

PIEFA has produced two experiential resources for Technology teachers from grades 7-10 that provide an opportunity for a range of knowledge and understanding and skills and processes to be observed. Like all plant foods, nuts are a good source of antioxidants and a range of vitamins and minerals. They also have high levels of the healthy fats (mono and polyunsaturated fats) and low levels of the unhealthy fats (saturated fats). Nuts are also a good source of fibre and have a low Glycemic Index (GI) which means they will help keep you fuller for longer. Nuts contain around 10 to 20% protein, a similar amount to that found in eggs. They sit alongside meat and eggs in the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating as they share similar nutrient profiles. So, nuts can be a good source of protein for vegetarians and vegans.

PIEFA will ‘unshell’ this resource, allowing you to ‘crack open’ both the content and practical elements. PIEFA will also provide an overview of www.primezone.edu.au to help you expand your teaching repertoire.

Completing the Knowing & Growing: Technology Mandatory teacher professional development will contribute 3 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 2.6.2 and 3.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
