Bek-Jean Stewart and The Society for the Lost will be releasing her latest solo album, Songs from the North, which showcases the powerful poetry of her lyrics as well as the vibrancy of her composing and arranging. She will be joined by long-time musical collaborator Grant Shanahan on bass guitar. The band also features Matt Galvin on guitars, Johnny Gauci on keys, and Lawrence Pastro on drums.
Like many of the artists who have inspired her, Bek-Jean uses vivid, haunting melodies to tell stories of loss, love and redemption. The spirited and even jubilant style of her music starkly contrasts with the deeply-felt emotions of her lyrics. Often referred to as desolate or raw, her words nonetheless transport listeners to a place inside the song. Stewart’s songwriting style is usually described as Americana, although her music also has elements of country, folk, and rock.
Stewart’s albums explore fear and solicitation, the importance of the animal bond, the beauty of the natural world, living by rivers, and the transformation of one’s soul, while not hiding from the loneliness and isolation that is ever-present in her songs. Stewart is unafraid to examine difficult thoughts and feelings, from the challenge of being born into the ‘wrong’ body, to fantasies of murder and suicide. Her new album, Songs From The North, confirms Stewart’s prodigious ability to make the listener’s heart ache with emotion.
Over the course of more than a decade as a solo artist, Stewart’s turbulent yet tender songwriting has showcased the increasing maturity, courage, and complexity of her musicianship. Bek-Jean Stewart’s albums demonstrate, time and time again, her capacity for astonishing and moving songwriting. Stewart will be supported by the very talented Mindy Sotiri. This is a show not to miss.
Singer-songwriter Mindy Sotiri returns to Django with music, stories and questionable life advice. Mindy writes songs that are spun from the mess of every day life. She has developed a reputation for her unique and honest songwriting, as well as making the drunk women of Marrickville weep. She will be playing tunes from her critically acclaimed fifth album ‘Women Smoking’.
