Intro to Musical Improv will introduce students to the basic concepts and tools needed to create songs and music in the moment.

There is nothing more joyful than creating a fully improvised song out of thin air. It can explore the emotional connections of the your characters and drive the action of the scene forward, all while getting a catchy chorus stuck in your audience’s head for hours.

If you’ve ever wanted to stretch your improv muscles then Intro to Musical Improv is where you should start.

Specific skills and topics covered:

  • How to use lyrics as a storytelling tool
  • How to work with other improvisers and a musician to create improvised songs
  • Basic song structures, rhyming, rhythm and melody techniques
  • Creating songs from your character’s perspective
  • When to bring an improvised song into a long form
  • How to end an improvised song
  • How you can sing great even when your singing isn’t great
  • Beginner vocal warm ups

There is no previous musical experience required to take this class, whether you’ve never sung outside of the shower or you’ve toured all great Opera Houses of the world, this workshop is for you! However, successful completion of Big Fork Theatre's Intermediate 1: The Scene is required to take this class - you need to have a good grounding in improv. Special consideration may be made at the discretion of the teacher, if you don't fit this criteria but you feel that you have the required training and skill please contact our Training Director at training@bigforktheatre.com to discuss.

This course meets for 4 sessions on Wednesday Evenings starting 25 September at 6:30PM that are each 3 hours long. The final class will be on 16 October. You will perform in a graduation show on Thursday  24 October.

Improv is for everyone. It doesn't matter how experienced or inexperienced you are as a performer Big Fork Theatre's classes are designed to benefit everyone. Our classes focus on developing your listening skills, stage confidence and team work.

Big Fork Theatre's improvisational classes are beneficial for actors and comedians looking to add a new skill set to their performing repertoire. Improv is becoming increasingly desired when casting and can help performers adjust to any situation whether it be during an audition or in the rehearsal room.

Improvisation is an excellent way to improve your communication skills and confidence when speaking in public.  

About Big Fork Theatre

Big Fork Theatre is dedicated to long form improvisation in the Chicago and New York style, as made famous by Tina Fey, Amy Poheler and Mike Meyers.  Big Fork primarily focuses on comedic improvisation.

Big Fork's teachers have many years experience both in teaching and performing, many of whom have traveled around the world to learn from some of the best improv teachers there are.  Our teachers are committed to creating a fun and enriching environment to learn in and grow the Brisbane improvisational community.
