The Brisbane Improv Festival is excited to be hosting 22 Improvisation Workshops as part of the 2022 Festival with facilitators from all over Australia and New Zealand.

HEXAFLEXAGON

“A hexaflexagon is a brightly-coloured six-sided shape that folds in on and out of itself to reveal face upon face upon face. This show is also a hexaflexagon. Six brightly-coloured shape-shifting actors fold scenes in on and out of themselves to reveal face upon face upon face. We wear lip gloss and carry a sword and play Super Mario and explore the forest and cry wet tears and eat giant pink-frosted donuts and party until dawn. We’re hexaflexagons. And so are you.”

This workshop explores a range of abstract, heightened and non-naturalistic performance techniques and styles, then collides them together in a high-energy hyperpop show. Participants will play with scenes that are simultaneously artificial and sincere, arty and approachable, and leave with skills and outlooks to try these ideas in their own shows in the future. 

Please note that any Festival shows cast from workshops is at the discretion of the show's director and is not guaranteed. Please go into workshops with a view to learning new improv skills and having fun. Any performance opportunity is a bonus.

Jim Fishwick is an award-winning theatremaker, writer and teacher. A former Australian national champion improvisor, they are the general manager of Jetpack Theatre, who create experiential, interactive and immersive theatre. Jim also hosts two podcasts, writes for the BBC2 quiz show Only Connect, plays the ukulele and enjoys cryptic crosswords.

The Brisbane Improv Festival will be following all current COVID-19 safety guidelines and will also require all workshop participants to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 for the wellbeing of all participants and facilitators - please note this is a extra requirement mandated by the Festival.
