Recognise and Respond to Domestic Violence

AMA (NSW) will be hosting a webinar for members on recognising and responding to patients experiencing domestic violence during COVID-19.

The pandemic has created a ‘perfect storm’ for patients – job loss, social distancing measures, and an inability to reach out to regular supports may be further exacerbating situations of domestic violence.

Telehealth also presents a new challenge for medical professionals in identifying patients who may be experiencing domestic violence, as well as ensuring their safety and privacy during phone or video consultations.

Our panel of experts will discuss:

• How to identify and respond to patients who may be affected by domestic violence during COVID-19 using telehealth or face to face consultations
• Developing yes or no questions for use in telehealth consultations
• Advice on developing safe words/phrases
• Providing options for patients to escape family violence
• Considerations around obligations of parenting plans and potential disputes about what is safe or not safe for kids visiting multiple homes
• Guidance for GPs on how to document physical injuries
