Cuplet Poetry #21: Frolova, Lee, Menken & Shying

It's back! It's finally, finally back! For the first time since March 2020, Cuplet Poetry Night returns for its 21st event, and we're teaming up with Made In Newcastle for an auspicious and glorious all-locals night at Babylon Newcastle. Join us for a night of live poetry, drinks and sparkling conversation. Tickets are limited, so book in as soon as possible to secure a seat. And - a new little treat - we'll have silent disco headphones for anyone who wants to really, y'know, zone in. Tickets are $10 online through Facebook.

Cuplet is a monthly poetry event run by founder Claire Albrecht. It takes place every second Thursday of the month (usually) at The Beaumont, Hamilton (Newcastle, Australia). It features touring established poets as well as a curated section of local emerging writers.

Readers appear by invitation.

Announcing for Cuplet #21:

IRINA FROLOVA is a Russian-Australian poet who lives on the Awabakal land with her three children and two fur babies. She has a degree in philology from Moscow City Pedagogical University, and she is currently studying psychology at Deakin University. Her work has appeared in Not Very Quiet, Australian Poetry Collaboration, Baby Teeth Journal, Rochford Street Review, The Blue Nib, and The Australian Multilingual Writing Project, as well as various anthologies. Her first collection of poetry, Far and Wild, is released by Flying Island Books in early 2021.

JOHN DAMIEN LEE is a Newcastle-based poet, playwright and performer. He is also a self discovered, self aware autistic man. Much of John's poetry deals with his struggle with mental and physical health. He has recently begun drawing and painting. He is unpublished.

ANDREW MENKEN lives and writes on the Central Coast. He has recently begun a PhD at the University of Newcastle and is composing a collection of poems that centres around his hometown of Budgewoi. Andrew’s poetry has previously been published in SWAMP and Quadrant. When he isn’t deciphering graffiti under Budgewoi Bridge, you’ll find him playing guitar or Scrabble with his overly-competitive mother.

KERRI SHYING is a poet of Wiradjuri and Chinese family, publishing across many journals and anthologies. She is the author of a bilingual pocketbook of poems sing out when you want me (2017), Elevensies (2018) and Knitting Mangrove Roots (2019). Kerri held the Varuna Dr Eric Dark Flagship Fellowship for 2019 for her current collection Know Your Country (Puncher and Wattman 2020). Kerri has been convenor of Write Up, a free arts/writing group for people living with disability, for 5 years. She lives with disability from SLE/Sjogrens and PsA, in Newcastle, NSW with her famous dog Max Spangly. Kerri is nominated for https://theaspireawards.com.au 2020, an activity of the Human Rights Commission, for disability activism in the arts.
