Nemarluk School Wings Fundraiser
Nemarluk School is a Northern Territory Department of Education (DOE) school for children who require specialised and individualised educational programs. The school was administrated as a special unit at Ludmilla Primary School in the early 1970s, and in July 1986 it became officially recognised as a school. The school changed its name from Ludmilla Special School to Nemarluk School in 1994 to reflect it’s then location in Darwin; Nemarluk Drive. The name was also significant as Nemarluk was an Indigenous man from the Wadeye (Port Keats) region recognised for fierce protection of his family. When Ted Eagan was Administrator for the NT, he presented the school with a photo of Nemarluk which sits in the school foyer with the inscription: ‘He fought for his family’.
The School now has its own building in Alawa, where it has been delivering preschool and primary school programs since 2012.
The Nemarluk Preschool opened on the 14 April 1998, after much work by families of young children with disabilities. The Preschool is a collaborative program involving school support services to offer students aged from 3.5 years to 5 years’ opportunities to participate in a wide variety of early childhood activities as offered to all learners in the NT. The indiviudalised programs focus on school readiness skills, play, social skills, personal care and self regulation.
Students aged 5 – 12 years with moderate and severe intellectual and/or multiple disability can attend the Primary School. Programs, designed using the Australian Curriculum, are delivered from classrooms within the Nemarluk campus and/or from satellite classes within local primary schools.
Nemarluk School draws its population from a wide geographic area, including Palmerston/Rural and most suburbs within Darwin. There are 12 classes based within our Styles Street, Alawa, campus and 11 classes hosted by Stuart Park, Millner, Nightcliff, Alawa, Wanguri, Wulagi and Manunda Terrace primary schools. All the classes return to our Alawa campus one day a week.
The school currently has 145 Primary and 12 Pre-School aged students.
Our families and the community are integral to our achievements, we have partnered with many successful organisations and individuals over the years to create the environment required for the developing needs of our students. Without your support, Nemarluk School would not be able to provide many of the required resources.
