        Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Brisbane Ball

The inaugural  JRS BALL in Brisbane will seek both to raise funds and awareness to support the work of JRS in Australia and internationally.

The JRS Ball started in Sydney and has been held annually since 2003 .   It has served as an avenue for young people to make a concrete difference in the lives of those who are among the poorest and most vulnerable in our global community–asylum seekers and refugees .   2009 will be the first year a JRS Ball is held in Brisbane .

The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is an international Catholic organisation with a mission to accompany, serve and defend the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people both around the world (in over 50 countries) and in our own Australian community.  JRS Australia works with asylum seekers and refugees by responding to their plight in a manner that is both personal and practical.   JRS particularly focuses on urgent needs where no one else is working.  

We support asylum seekers in the community who have little or no access to government services with accommodation, financial assistance, English classes, job search (for those with permission to work) and personal support and accompaniment .   We also provide support to those who have been granted refugee status to find employment and offer assistance with their transition to independence.

We regularly visit Sydney ’s Villawood Detention Centre in a pastoral/caring role. We also research the nature and causes of refugee flight in the Pacific Region and provide advice to government and non-government organisations on policy and program responses in this area.

As well as offering professional support for asylum seekers and refugees, we have the services of a team of volunteers , (including the JRS Brisbane Ball committee!) who assist us in our work.
