Overview of 2009 Event
The fourth Australian Tango Championship cultural event will be staged on Saturday 11 July 2009 at the Sir John Clancy Auditorium in Kensington, Sydney.
The event on the day will encompass qualifying rounds for the four NEW Australian Categories and the semi-finals of the World Tango Champion category of Stage Tango in the morning. Followed by semi-finals for the World Tango Championship category of Salon Open and finals of the Australian categories in the afternoon, cumulating with the finals and a show in the evening. The show will feature performances from our guest international judges , national judges, past Australian Stage Tango Champions, and the Sydney Youth Orchestra's TangoOZ led by Maggie Ferguson .
PRELIMINARY QUALIFYING ROUNDS
12:30pm - 3:00pm
Preliminaries Australian categories (Vals, Milonga and Dance with a Stranger) and Semi-finals WTC Stage.
CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS AND SHOW
4:00pm - 6:00pm Finals Australian categories (Vals, Milonga and Dance with a Stranger) and Semi-finals WTC Salon Performance current Australian Stage Tango champions
6:30pm - 9:45pm Finals World Tango Championship categories Salon and Stage Sydney Youth Tango Orchestra - TangoOZ Performances of Australian and Argentinean judges
A Spectator Ticket gives you access to the whole day. (If you only want to watch the preliminaries, entry is $10 at the door).
Our objectives of holding the Australian Tango Championship are:
- to expand and promote Argentine Tango culture in Australia.
- create a community event that everyone can feel that they can participate and have fun in.
- give Australia's best Tango dancers the opportunity to present Australia in the semi-finals of the VII World Tango Championship in Buenos Aires in 2009, as well as gaining the prestigious tile of Australian Tango Champion!
- continue to raise the levels of Tango in Australia
- to celebrate this dance that we love
This year's Australian Tango Championship have been designed to have “something for everyone”, whether spectator, competitor or dancer.
The Australian Tango Championship will provide winning Salon & Stage tango couples with return airfares to Buenos Aires, providing them with the opportunity to represent Australia in the VII World Tango Championship being held from 21 - 31 August 2009.
In Australia, this event is run by a not-for-profit company, Australian Tango Championship Limited.
