This program focuses on the Easter themes of sacrifice and new hope in an exploration of startling musical contrasts and the presentation of two major new works. The major work in the program, 'Passion and Resurrection', is an Australian premiere by leading younger generation Latvian composer, Eriks Ešenvalds. Heralded in Gramophone magazine as a work of sublime beauty and originality, it combines forces of soprano solo, chamber choir and string orchestra. Not a narrative Passion as such, more a series of reflective poetic statements, the piece presents the ancient Easter themes of death and new life in an impressive tapestry of sound. The program also presents the world premiere of a new work by young Australian composer, Joseph Twist. Twist's impressive understanding of the choral medium will lead to a new choral work on the themes of redemption and renewal.
Balancing the program are works from ancient masters Gesualdo and Lassus through to contemporary composers from Scotland and Australia. Sydney Chamber Choir combines forces once again with resident solo soprano, Belinda Montgomery and Sydney Camerata Chamber Orchestra, rekindling a successful artistic partnership set in train in 2012.
The content of this program summarises Musical Director Paul Stanhope’s vision for the choir: delivering quality performances, presenting fascinating new work from Australia and around the world, and collaborating with like-minded artistic partners in a truly immersive artistic experience.
Premium ticket holders will be invited to a pre-concert talk.
