Gail Kelly is Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of The Westpac Group. Westpac has around 37,000 employees and serves approximately 10 million customers across its five key customer-facing divisions.
Forbes magazine ranked Gail Kelly the 11th most powerful woman in world following her appointment to Westpac in 2008. Under Gail’s leadership, Westpac has embarked upon a new customer centric growth strategy, focused on earning all of its customers' business. The merger of Westpac with St.George Bank in December 2008 is central to this strategy, providing more choice to customers, with attractive brands and deeper distribution.
Gail became the first woman CEO of a major Australian bank or top 15 company when she served as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of St.George Bank from January 2002 to August 2007. During this time St.George more than doubled its total assets and more than doubled its profits.
Gail began her banking career as a teller at Nedcor Bank, one of the largest banks in South Africa, and is now considered the most powerful businesswoman in Australia. Gail will also share her thoughts on the current economic environment and how it has affected business both large and small.
Gail is currently a director of both Melbourne Business School and the Financial Markets Foundation for Children; and is a member of the Financial Services Advisory Council and Australian Bankers’ Association, as well as the International Business Council of the World Economic Forum. Gail is married to Allan, and they have four children. The family migrated to Australia in 1997.
