About Cancer Council NSW
Cancer Council NSW is a community-focused, community-funded, not-for-profit and non-government organisation with the mission to defeat cancer through engaging the community. With a local office in Orange NSW, the staff and volunteers are dedicated to collaborating with the community and working towards realising its vision where lives are not cut short nor diminished by cancer.
Cancer Council NSW invests fundraising dollars into world-class research programs, covering all cancers and the whole cancer journey, from prevention and screening through to diagnosis, treatment and living well after cancer. Cancer Council is also focused on the under-funded cancer types, ensuring its mission to defeat all cancers in all people is achieveable.
Cancer Council's support programs ensure that nobody faces a cancer diagnosis alone and that information and support is always available. The Cancer Coucil Helpline 13 11 20 is an invaluable support service that is funded by such fundraising events. Manned by oncology experts and counsellors, the Helpline 13 11 20 is the first point of call for any cancer related question or issue and can assist cancer patients and their families with one-off financial grants, transport and accomodation for treatment, pro-bono legal and financial advice from local firms, put people in touch with local support groups, over the phone counselling and much more.
Cancer Council also has community focused prevention and advocacy campaigns to help educate communities in how to reduce their cancer risk. Cancer Council's SunSmart program is one such initiative which aims to establish best-practice approach to applying sun-protection policies in schools. Cancer Council has also been a huge player in milestone legislations passed in NSW and also nationally including plain packet tobacco laws, banning of smoking in pubs and clubs and also the banning of sunbeds.
This holistic approach to defeating cancer has seen Cancer Council make huge breakthroughs and reach new heights in the fight against cancer - and Cancer Council cannot do this work without vital funds which are raised through community-focused events like this and the generosity of its supporters and sponsors alike.
