Illuminart is known for spectacular building projection and lighting installation but also has a hand in small scale installations that en masse transform a neighbourhood. Our current favourite project is a textile lantern that can be illuminated from within by illuminart's touch interactive LED modules, to create a unique mood light.
Our first textile lantern workshop in 2014 will be held at Red Lime Shack, to bring together people who love op shops, fabric swaps, and the fun of craft and sewing. Together you will be making new textile lanterns to give to the Red Lime Shack and to take home or give away as gifts.
The workshop fee will be $15 paid in cash on the day, which helps to cover some of the costs of thread, sewing machine maintenance etc and donations are very welcome. You will also have the option of purchasing an LED module (approx $50) which you can add to your own lantern to turn it into a beautiful unique mood light.
Here's what is involved:
1) An optional meeting at Red Lime Shack on February 27th (or thereabouts, TBC shortly) and we'll meet each other, look at the lanterns that have been made before, talk about what fabrics to collect and contribute in the week before the workshop.
2) An optional op shopping session on March 1st at a couple of local stores, to collect items that can be salvaged into new lanterns.
3) The workshop itself at Red Lime Shack on 2nd March, BYO scissors, fabrics, cottons, bits and bobs, favourite sewing machine if you want to. (Make sure your things are labelled!). We will have sewing machines, overlocker, spare scissors and fabrics which you can use by donation! So you can come unencumbered with nothing at all if you like, or bring things to share.
The lanterns take 2hrs to make but often longer as everyone loves to embellish them. So if you need to you can take them home to work on them, and bring them back to Red Lime Shack to display when you are done.
