Newcastle orchestra to present a concert of royal proportions

Sound the trumpets – Newcastle’s community orchestra is preparing to present a programme full of noble classics “Fit for a King”.

Orchestra Nova will present its second all ages concert for 2014 at Lake Macquarie Performing Arts Centre on Sunday 24 August at 2pm.

For centuries, composers have been commissioned to commemorate significant royal events with often majestic and grandiose fanfares, marches, concertos and suites. From the marriage of Princess Margaret in 1960, to the ascension to the throne of King Stephan of Hungary in the year 1000, Orchestra Nova will present a collection of pieces inspired by and written for royalty.

The programme will present works written by giants of classical composition such as Beethoven, Elgar and Tchaikovsky and spanning some 150 years.

“There’s something about this style of composition that rouses pride and honour unlike any other,” said Robin Fischle, the orchestra’s Musical Director and current conductor.

“Bold orchestral works such as these are designed to inspire reverence, admiration and respect for the aristocracy, and to celebrate the collective love of their people,” he added. “But there is more to this music than pomp and ceremony. Each composition is designed to invoke the character of its subject - from royal patrons of music to newly crowned monarchs - all while incorporating the composer’s definitive style and flair.”

In Orchestra Nova tradition, the programme promises something for everyone.

“Our concerts are always very family oriented and we try to appeal to people from all ages and walks of life”, said Orchestra Nova President, Paul Shearman.

“We’re just people from the community, giving something back. It’s a great way to celebrate the diversity of talent our community offers. Music is such a great way to bring people together,” he added.

The musicians playing in Orchestra Nova range in age, experience and background and include students, teachers, doctors, engineers and retirees.

More information is available at the orchestra’s website: www.orchestranova.org.au

The event will also include a raffle and light refreshments can be purchased.

Tickets: $15 general admission, $10 student/pensioner concession. Discounts are available for group bookings. All ages are welcome.
