"The Rolls Royce of Australian Jazz" Sydney Morning Herald

"The premier large ensemble in Australian Jazz - and one of the finest anywhere!" The Australian

"As always, the virtuosity and musicianship are peerless" The Age, Melbourne

Australia's internationally acclaimed band Ten Part Invention returns after long absence from the scene. This will be an exciting and rare opportunity to see Australia’s most innovative and exciting contemporary jazz ensemble “live”, and with three new members adding to the all-star lineup, performing in the intimacy of Sydney's finest jazz club, Foundry 616, for one night only.

Your host for the evening will be the founder himself, the silver fox of Jazz and ‘raconteur extraordinaire’, drummer John Pochée OAM.

Hailed as the ‘Rolls Royce’ of Australian Jazz. and one of the greatest, most expressive large ensembles to emerge from Australia, Ten Part Invention was created as a flexible medium for Australian jazz composers and improvisers. With numerous national and international tours and several acclaimed albums to their credit, the band members constitute a substantial part of Australian modern jazz history and promise music that is unique, committed and visionary.

The ensemble features some of our most distinctive and brilliant solo voices in the seven original members:

Sandy Evans Tnr/Sop/MD

Paul Cutlan Bari/Alto

Miroslav Bukovsky Tpt/MD

Andrew Robson Alto

Warwick Alder Tpt

Paul McNamara Piano

James Greening Tmb

Will be joined by new ensemble members, all incredible musicians and leaders in their own right:

Dave Goodman Drums

Karl Dunnicliff Bass

Matt Ottignon Tnr/Sop

In 2004, the original 10-piece toured to the USA at the invitation of the Chicago Jazz Festival where they received a standing ovation and critical acclaim. The group then went on to perform at Clubs and Universities as well as a concert at the John F. Kennedy Centre For The Performing Arts in Washington DC. www.tenpartinvention.com/media

Their discography includes the self-titled Ten Part Invention recorded by ABC in 1987 and re-released in 1990, Tall Stories, Rufus Records, 1994, Unidentified Spaces, Rufus, 2000 and described by critics as one of Australia’s greatest historic jazz recordings Live at Wangaratta – the music of Roger Frampton, ABC, 2005.

The innovative approach and original compositions of Ten Part Invention have been an inspiration to the Australian contemporary jazz scene. Performances are always colourful, thrilling and adventurous. At this event the band will be playing compositions by Sandy Evans, Miroslav Bukovsky and Roger Frampton, as well as premiering a new work by Paul Cutlan.

Even though Frampton's piano playing is absent, we hear him still through his inspiring compositions and John Pochee's 10-piece Ten Part Invention remains a strong unit, where spirited performances are guaranteed given such brilliant soloists on board.

Ever evolving, as was intended, this promises to be a stunning return to the stage by our leading Australian large jazz ensemble. Don't miss it!
