Matt McMahon solo piano

Saturday 9th May 2015, 3:00pm (Doors open at 2:30pm)
Berry School of Arts

"McMahon's playing is ravishing ... ". John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald

This performance showcases the music of his critically acclaimed first solo piano album, The Voyage of Mary and William (Paths and Streams Records). This beautifully lyrical and lush music portrays his musical interests and heritage – paying particular tribute to his forbears from Ireland, Mary and William.

One of Australia’s foremost pianist/composers, Matt McMahon is the recipient of Australia’s highest honours in jazz, the National Jazz Award (1999) and Freedman Jazz Fellowship (2005). Matt has performed extensively at many the leading festivals across Australia and Asia.

Well known as an active collaborator, Matt has appeared on over eighty albums and has performed and recorded with international luminaries such Greg Osby, Christian McBride, Mike Stern and Australian icons Mike Nock, (the late) Bernie McGann, Dale Barlow, Andrea Keller, Katie Noonan, James Morrison and James Muller.

This performance highlights McMahon’s uninterrupted musical thoughts, from quiet to ruminative, to intense and explosive.
