Renowned acoustic chamber-folk trio The String Contingent comprises Australians, Chris Stone (violin) and Holly Downes (double bass), with Scotsman Graham McLeod (guitar). Over the past six years and four albums they have reached ‘the upper echelon of instrumental exploration, arrangement, composition and performance’ (Tony Hillier, Rhythms). With distinct backgrounds in Celtic folk, classical, jazz and contemporary music, Chris, Graham and Holly share a musical ethos that highlights the individuality of each musician, thus eclipsing genre. In May the intrepid trio travel to Afghanistan for a two week intensive residency, teaching and performing at the Afghanistan National Institute of Music, before they head to the UK and Scandinavia for another extensive tour of festivals and concerts. Currently, they are artists in residence at Four Winds, the music haven near Bermagui, NSW, and will record their fifth album there in April. New improvised music from this project will feature at Django Bar, alongside a support slot from Afghani-Australians Eman Rawi (harmonia) and Idrees Qurishi (percussion).
