Tuesdays @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Tues 21 July

8:00pm Hannah James + Matt McMahon

Matt McMahon is one of Australia’s most highly respected and well known jazz pianists. He is a past recipient of the Freedman and National jazz awards, leads the Matt McMahon Trio and is a co-leader of Band of Five Names with which he has recorded several albums. Matt is also the musical director for Vince Jones and a frequent collaborator with such artists as Phil Slater, Katie Noonan, Sandy Evans, Simon Barker, Steve Hunter, Dave Panichi and many others. He has appeared with a variety of groups and at major music festivals both in Australia and overseas. In this instalment of the Jazzgroove Featured Artist series he teams with up and coming bassist Hannah James. McMahon’s Band of Five Names’ self titled album was one of the first Australian jazz albums Hannah was given and to this day one of the most well loved and well worn records in her collection. So, needless to say, she is very excited about this gig! In the intimate and conversational duo setting the pair will be presenting a collection of Hannah’s originals and favourite standards.

9:30pm Matilda Abraham ft. Jonathan Zwartz

Matilda Abraham is a Sydney based singer. She usually performs her original music as an electronic trio with guitarist Carl Morgan and drummer James Waples. For this performance the trio are very excited to be joined by renowned Sydney bassist and composer Jonathan Zwartz.
Matilda’s approach to writing music reflects a clear and honest passion for song. Led by melody, she searches for ideas that provoke a feeling. Exploring a range of dynamic shifts, Matilda’s music encompasses layers of both electronic and acoustic parts, interwoven with lush vocal harmonies.
Matilda’s singing brings a bright and vibrant sound to her diverse original repertoire. Her approach is honest, combining a rich musicality with stark vulnerability and warmth.
