Ellen Kirkwood's Mieville Project + Alon Ilsar & Sandy Evans (DOUBLE BILL)

In association with Jazzgroove.

Quirky, strange and at times dark, twisted mechanical rhythms counter strange and extraordinary sounds in this festival exclusive, as we premiere new works inspired by fantasy fiction British author, China Mieville and specially commissioned by Ars Musica for the Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival

Jann Rutherford Memorial Award recipient (2012), trumpeter and bandleader Ellen Kirkwood has rapidly been gaining recognition for her compositional work. Kirkwood’s five-part suite Theseus and the Minotaur(2012) received wide-spread critical acclaim. In this latest work; Mieville’s fantasy world provides the perfect setting for Kirkwood to conjure weird machines, creatures and constructions into life.

Ellen Kirkwod (trumpet), Sandy Evans (saxes), Hannah James (bass), Emma Stephenson (piano) and Alon Ilsar (drums).

Alon Ilsar & Sandy Evans
Two dynamic musicians improvise, create and loop new music, intertwining and creating new worlds of sound with AirSticks and saxophone.
